Artist Statement
When creating this collection, while still loosely adhering to concepts of value, I was able to shift to a stronger focus on color and light. By my own parameters, florals allow me to be more playful and expressive than in more traditional landscapes or still life pieces. Brush strokes end up being looser, random marks are a welcome addition, and chances are taken with colors, which equals much joy for this artist. In the past, when painting florals, I would often pause early in the process and think: “what if I stopped here?” To explore this notion, several pieces are intentionally less developed than the path I might normally take. It is my hope to have produced a body of work that spans the gamut between realism and abstraction bridged by color and light, with a sense of submersion and a healthy dose of whimsy.
