Carson worked closely with designer Tera Janelle from Lynchburg, Virginia to create a commission that fit the vision Tera had for her client’s space.

After a series of emails, Carson and Tera spoke over the phone to ensure they were on the same page and flesh-out the design. Carson worked-up this sketch while on the phone with Tera.

Tera’s vision of the commission drew from two of Carson’s paintings. She was drawn to the colors in the muted marshes pictured above. When Carson and Tera were discussing colors, Carson was seeing more yellow tones in the painting while Tera saw more green. It was a good reminder of the importance of using different words, explanations and examples to describe the colors one sees Through the extended conversation, Carson was able to gain an understanding of the look and palette Tera would like.

The second painting Tera wished to use as a reference for the composition or lay-out. Since the size of the commission (60” x 40”) would be much larger than the referenced painting, they decided to make the horizon line the top 1/3 of the painting rather than the bottom 1/3.

The two stayed in touch during the process primarily to check whether the palette met Tera’s visions. After Carson emailed Tera a photo of the finished painting, Tera responded, “Yes, I love, LOVE it!”
